Question: What do successful salon/spa business owners have in common?
Answer: They have a plan to get where they want to go.
They have clearly stated goals, have selected the ‘strategies’ they will use, and have designed and scheduled the ‘tactics’ (tasks) to help achieve those goals.
We know, we know … you’re dying to get out there, start talking to the press, doing interviews, staging events, and doing the fun stuff. But please heed this advice. Don’t go out there without planning out your overall PR first.
Everyone has Random Success
If you don’t know in advance where you go after a successful PR ‘happening’, what your next PR activity is going to be, where to keep the focus, successes are always going to be … random.
Also, your public relations planning must consider everyone involved. You need those around you invested in your (and their) success as well. There’s:
- Your staff
- Your clients
- Your friends
- Your industry allies
They all should know and understand their role(s), feel the excitement of what you have planned. and be prepared to provide the support you will need to ‘get there’ long-term.
What’s in a Plan?
With your public relations plan in hand, you will know:
- Your goals.
- The strategies you plan to use.
- The tactics & tasks you will need to employ.
- What ‘things’ you need along the way.
- What your priorities are.
- What the timetable is.
- How much it’s going to cost.
- How long it should take.
It is not a difficult process, but it is time (and thought) consuming. It’s extremely helpful to have an experienced guide and motivating partners to work with to make it realistic, and put it in print. That’s what Sharon and Alex do.
Of course it’s a process of back and forth fine-tuning details throughout the planning and creative process period,
